Derek Dennett

Derek Dennett attended the Alberta College of Art, Sheridan College (Oakville, ON), and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1984 and his Master of Fine Arts in 1989. His paintings and installations use his turn of the century apartment/studio as a focus and catalyst for ideas. They are sometimes humorous, often labor intensive, and are of a perceptual nature.

Dennett has exhibited in solo and group shows in Canadian and American galleries, including Stride and Truck Galleries (Calgary, AB), the Art Gallery of Southern Alberta (Lethbridge, AB), Ace Art Inc. (Winnipeg, MB), Anna Leonowens Gallery (Halifax, NS), and Minor Injury Gallery (Brooklyn, NY). His work has been supported by Alberta Culture and the Canada Council for the Arts, and is held in the collections of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Canada Council Art Bank. Dennett is a past member of Calgary’s Burns Visual Art Society, an organization that provides affordable studio space to local working visual artists. Dennett co-curated imPressive: Alberta Printmakers 2017 Juried Members Show, with University of Calgary Professor Emeritus William Laing, RCA. He is the curator of Midtowne Gallery in Calgary, which features contemporary art from accomplished established & emerging artists from Alberta and Western Canada.
