Bryan Chubb

Self-taught painter Bryan Chubb was born in Edmonton, Alberta and grew up in small towns in Alberta and British Columbia. Bryan’s work has been shown in exhibitions in Edmonton, Calgary, Grande Prairie, Prince George, Medicine Hat, Burnaby and Kamloops. His works are held in the public collections of the Art Gallery of Alberta, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies.

Most at home in the wilderness, Bryan left his work as a graphic artist and cartographer to paint full time. At first, Bryan travelled in order to visit and paint the extraordinary variety of wilderness present throughout Western Canada. In 1999, he made a permanent move to the Cariboo Region of British Columbia where he has a studio nestled amongst the lakes, mountains, forests and streams.

His work is visceral; he wants the viewer to have a full and complete response to all elements of nature – including the weather, temperature and even insects – all within a spectacular view. Heavily influenced by landscape painter William Leroy Stevenson, elements of expressionism are evident in Bryan’s work. Intentionally messy, Bryan paints in an exuberant fashion, mixing colours together as he goes. Bryan does all this on-site, usually painting where he is most comfortable; outside and enveloped by nature.
