Sylvia Blashko

BiographySylvia Blashko was born in Smokey Lake, Alberta. A mother of three, she lives in Edmonton, Alberta and Victoria, British Columbia. Her work reflects her passion for gardening and living things, and she often paints flowers and other botanical subjects. She works primarily with oil on canvas and with watercolour. Her 2008 show, Butterfly Effect, held at the Front Gallery in Edmonton, included more abstract works and melds her interest in the natural world with her research and observations on global warming and climate change.

Blashko attended the University of Alberta, earning her BEd (1979), BFA (1983), and MVA (1985). She has also studied ceramics and modeling and the philosophy of art at the University of British Columbia and painting at New York University. Her works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions in Edmonton, Red Deer and Waterton National Park. She has taught art at Red Deer College’s SummerScapes Program and through the Menorah Academy, at Talmud Torah Elementary School and as a sessional instructor in the Faculty of Education at Concordia University College of Alberta, all in Edmonton. Her work is held in private collections around North America and in several public collections, including healthcare sector organizations such as the Alberta Registered Nurses Association, the Walter C. Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre and the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.
