Daniel Kirk

Daniel J. Kirk is known for his many murals and public arts installations, and his active role in Calgary’s arts community. He works primarily with paint and wood, and explores ideas inherent in our understanding of value and worth, social constructs, and symbols. His figurative and portrait works are ethereal and dreamlike, and his murals can be found in public spaces throughout Calgary including Millennium Park, the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts, and the Bowness Branch of the Calgary Public Library.
Kirk’s interest is in visual language and community engagement, and he has established a significant presence in the city for collaborating on large-scale public art projects. Alongside partner Katie Green, Kirk created a four-story stairwell installation entitled The Imaginarium for cSPACE Kind Edward in Calgary. At the outset of the project, they invited students in the building to “imagination workshops” where they invented and illustrated words like “mermicorn”, “plob” and “ptor.” They mixed workshop material with their own to create a stairwell dreamscape loaded with playful, whimsical images.
Kirk graduated with a BFA from the University of Calgary in 2006, and is the co-founder of the BlankPage Studio, a local creative hub with a mission to encourage dialogue and active participation in the development of Calgary’s cultural sphere.
