Ksenia Aronetz
Ksenia Aronetz was born in Kviv, Ukraine. She received her BA (history, 1965), BFA (1972) and MVA (1975) all from the University of Alberta. Aronetz taught visual arts at Grant MacEwan Community College and was an instructor in the University of Alberta’s Department of Art and Design for nearly twenty years. Her work is in several private and public collections, including the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago, Illinois.
A member of Edmonton’s Ukrainian community, Aronetz served on the Artistic Planning Committee of the Ukrainian Graeco-Catholic Parish of the Megalomartyr St. George the Victorious in Edmonton; the committee, whose ambition was to make this church the most beautiful Ukrainian church in Canada, dealt with questions of architecture and iconography for the new building (constructed from 1981 to 1982).
Aronetz’s work has been featured in group exhibitions in Edmonton and Calgary and was included alongside other important Alberta artists in exhibitions such as Alberta Now, an Edmonton Art Gallery exhibition celebrating Alberta’s 75th Anniversary, and Spaces and Places – Eight Decades of Landscape Painting in Alberta, an exhibition that travelled to the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the Heilongjiang Art Museum in China and that was also featured at the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary, Alberta. Aronetz undertook extended study tours to Europe and New York and attended an International Art Workshop in Skopje, Yugoslavia in 1979. She travelled regularly to New York to see major exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
