Carolyn Campbell
Born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Carolyn Campbell earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art and Design, her Bachelor of Arts in Art History, and her Master of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Alberta. In addition to teaching painting and Strategic Arts Management in the MBA Program at the University of Alberta, Carolyn has worked in development at MacEwan University (then Grant MacEwan College) and the Art Gallery of Alberta. She has served as Associate Dean of the Alberta School of Business at the University of Alberta and is currently the Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism for the Government of Alberta.
Carolyn has served on a number of boards and committees, including the Premier's Council on Culture, the Mayor's Business Roundtable, the Edmonton Symphony Society and the Winspear Centre Board of Directors, the UNICON Research Committee (International Consortium of Universities), the Edmonton Journal Community Advisory Board, the Alberta Chamber of Commerce Education Policy Committee, and the Member Relations Committee for the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce (vice-chair). She has been a panelist and guest speaker, including presenting at The Banff Centre and UBC Okanagan.
Encouraged by her grandmother, Carolyn started drawing and painting at an early age and received her first commission while still in high school. Inspired by history, beauty and iconic imagery, Carolyn uses repetition and layering in her prints and paintings to put a spin on the familiar and challenge the viewer’s preconceptions.
Carolyn has received a number of scholarships and awards and was a finalist for the Kingston Prize in 2009. Her paintings and prints have been exhibited publicly throughout Canada. Her works are held in private collections in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge, and in public collections by the University of Alberta, the Edmonton Golf and Country Club and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
