Timothy Atherton
1960 - 2014
Born in Sheffield, England, photographer Timothy Atherton received his education in the British Army and at the Middlesex and Durham Universities. Timothy came to Canada in 1989, where he lived in Iqaluit, Tuktoyaktuk and Yellowknife before settling in Edmonton, Alberta in 2005.
Using both people and nature for subjects, Timothy’s photographs were an ongoing attempt to understand what he saw. He always looked for traces – of people, memories, history – that lead him to conclusions, and often, more questions. Including a project documenting unemployment in post-industrial NE England, Timothy’s photo-documentary work took him to Honduras and Nicaragua in 1999 where he partnered with Oxfam Quebec, Save the Children and UNICEF on projects about street children and peacebuilding, and documenting the aftermath and reconstruction following Hurricane Mitch.
Timothy has received a variety of grants, and his work has been shown in group and solo exhibitions throughout Canada, and in England, Nicaragua and New York. His works are held in the permanent collections of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Canadian Centre for Architecture, the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, the Ydessa Hendeles Art Foundation and the J. Paul Getty Museum Research Institute.
Timothy passed away in 2014.
