Verne Busby

Verne Busby was born in Souris, Manitoba but has lived in Edmonton most of his life. He holds a BA (1972) and a secondary teaching certificate (1974) from the University of Manitoba and a Design Arts Diploma (1977) from Grant MacEwan Community College. He continued to study art through workshops and residencies, twice attending the Intensive Studies Seminar Art Workshop in Taos, New Mexico and three times participating in the Emma Lake Artists’ Residency in Saskatchewan. In 2011, he attended a Ted Harrison Artist Retreat Society Residency in Carcross, Yukon.

Verne Busby worked for several years in advertising in design and illustration, and in 1981 partnered with Bella Totino to form Totino Busby Design, providing commercial graphic design, illustration and animation services. He teaches at the University of Alberta Faculty of Art and Design and has moderated life drawing sessions for the Edmonton WECAN Society at the artist-run centre Harcourt House.

Busby works primarily in painting and drawing. He exhibits his work regularly at Alberta galleries and festivals. It is held in public and corporate collections, including those of the National Film Board of Canada, the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel and Jasper Park Lodge.
