Elena Evanoff

Edmonton-born artist Elena Evanoff completed her B.F.A. in Painting and Drawing at the University of Calgary (1992), and the same year founded her Paper Root Studio in Calgary to pursue “a new freedom.” Her goal was “creating something every day and not necessarily painting a great painting” because she said her new work exhibited truth in herself and “a range of movement and expression.”

Evanoff describes herself as “fascinated by the human figure” because art depicting it—such as her own intuitive and experimental drawings, paintings, and photography—provide “an instant intimacy and connection to our humanity and history.”

Director Douglas Taplin profiled Evanoff in the 35 mm short film “Elena Evanoff, Artist” for the Bravo! Network in 2002, shot on location in her studio. Collections across Canada and the U.S. contain her work, including that of Jean Charest, the former Premier of Quebec and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. She’s won the Elizabeth Greenshield’s Foundation award (1997), and Best of Show in the juried prize for Chicago’s Trip to Art (1998). She’s mounted several solo exhibitions including Mirror, Suspend, Camouflage, and Silhouette in Vancouver, Calgary, and Studio City, California, and participated in group shows in West Hollywood, Las Vegas, Chicago, and Santa Fe.
