Dawn Fenton

1962 - 2012

Edmonton-born digital print-maker Dawn Fenton studied art at the Red Brick Art Centre in Edson (1993 – 1998) and took numerous workshops at the Faculty of Extension at the University of Alberta (1994 – 2000) and the Creative Arts Society of Edson (1996, 2001) before earning her Diploma in Fine Art from MacEwan University (2004).

Fenton’s stunning digital collages include the Photoshop 7-rendered “Urban Tranquility” (2004); the 61 cm x 62.6 cm nearly-square composition anchors itself on an oversized hummingbird in flight and the commanding, noir-ish face of a European woman whose eyes offer nothing but shadows. Fenton says her objective was to “communicate a feeling of urban living… using very graphic and geometric patterns for the background that mimics massive skyscrapers… to create a sense of tension.”

Fenton participated in numerous group exhibitions, including at the Alberta Community Art Clubs Association’s (ACACA) Northern Alberta Juried Art Show in Hinton, the Millennium Juried Art Show in Edson, and the MacEwan Graduates Juried Exhibition in Edmonton. The collections of Conroy & Ross Partners and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts include her work. She was a member of the Visual Arts Alberta Association, and maintained a membership in the ACACA. Her commendations include three honourable mentions at the ACACA Northern Zone Juried Show, the Brian Richard Blachut Memorial Award, and the Margaret Seelye Memorial Award. Dawn passed away in 2012.
