Cameron Douglas

Cameron Baird Douglas was born in Perth, Scotland. After his family moved to British Columbia in 1960, Douglas’s father taught art for a year in Surrey before they relocated to Fernie, B.C. to live amid the mountains. When Douglas was five years old, his parents placed their stake in Nelson, the location of the Kootenay School of Art. Douglas studied Graphic Design at Red Deer College but then switched to Sculpture to earn his Diploma of Fine Art (1981). He then studied Drawing and Sculpture at the David Thompson University Centre in Nelson (1983 – 1984).

After moving to Calgary, Douglas created for himself an apprenticeship of sorts at the Art in Bronze Foundry; when the foundry transferred to Kelowna, B.C. Douglas and his classmate Denis Kleine went with it. Douglas furthered his independent art education with six months in Europe (1988) to train in bronze casting. Time overseas allowed him to gaze in awe at the works of great masters, especially those of Emile Antoine Bourdelle and Antonio Borrego Gutierrez. After returning home, he spent a year at Calgary’s Bronzart Casting, and then devoted himself to sculpture.

Douglas’s exhibitions include the Calgary Stampede Art Show, North American Sculpture at Golden, Colorado, Sculpture in the Park in Loveland, Colorado, and several regional exhibitions in British Columbia and Alberta. His work dwells in collections across Canada, the U.S., and Europe.

Douglas now lives and works in Nelson, B.C.
