Dan Arberry
Although Dan Arberry was born in Ontario, he grew up in Northern British Columbia and pursued his studies in Alberta. He obtained a Fine Arts diploma from Grande Prairie Regional College, and a BFA degree from the University of Calgary (1998). He has travelled frequently throughout Europe, and was especially struck by the South of France, but he is still drawn back to the northern landscapes of Canada. After finishing his studies, he returned to Grande Prairie where he immersed himself in studio work at the Regional College, then later began teaching there. He still resides and exhibits in Grande Prairie, where he finds the local art community to be particularly vibrant.
He hosted a solo exhibit, Once Upon a Still Life, at Unique Gallery there in 2010, after an absence from art practice of five or ten years. According to Arberry, his work translates his personal experiences through metaphor and other symbols. He has used varied media, including charcoal, pastels, conté chalk and litho pencils, experimenting with the effects of colour and texture. An exhibit held at Peace Gallery North in 2016, Hidden Amongst the Treasures, marked a change from drawing to painting, while still exhibiting the line-work he is known for. The themes are objects found in nature, such as pine cones and grains, small objects that are often overlooked.
Since 2010, he has been teaching drawing at the Grande Prairie Centre for Creative Arts, and also sits on the Board of Directors for that Centre, as well as for the Art of the Peace magazine. His work is held in various private and public permanent collections, including at the Chetwynd Art Council, and at Scurfield Hall, University of Calgary.
