Delwyn Darling
1921 - 2000
Vancouver-born artist Delwyn Darling lived in Alberta for forty-four years. In addition to undertaking art workshops in Dawson Creek (1960 – 1961), she earned her General Art Diploma at the Alberta College of Art and Design (1967) and studied at the University of Calgary (1970 – 1972).
Describing her work, Delwyn wrote that it “is the result of a love of drawing and years of study. I enjoy exploring the possibilities of the media I work with—mainly acrylics, watercolours, and oil pastels. The process is in fact a search for a way to interpret, and draw attention to, the beauty around us.”
In addition to staging solo exhibitions at the Centennial Gallery, Gulf Canada Gallery, and Dandelion Gallery in Calgary, and at the Federation of Canadian Artists Gallery in Vancouver, Darling participated in numerous group exhibitions, including at the Edmonton Art Gallery, Sunshine Village in Banff, and the Nickle Arts Museum in Calgary.
Darling’s work can be found in the permanent collections of the W.C. MacKenzie Health Sciences Centre in Edmonton, Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary, Esso Canada, Gulf Canada, Encor Energy Corporation, and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
She was a member of the Alberta Society of Artists, the British Columbia chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and Canadian Artists’ Representation/le Front des Artistes Canadiens and the Edmonton Contemporary Artists Society. The Delwyn Darling memorial endowment bursary administered through the Alberta College of Art and Design was developed in her honour. Delwyn passed away in 2000.
