Robert Dalton

Robert Dalton holds a BA in Fine Arts and Sociology (1969) and a Professional Teaching Certificate in Art Education (1970) from the University of Calgary, an MFA in Painting from the University of Washington (1980), and a Ph.D. in Art Education from Ohio State University (1991). He held teaching positions with the Calgary Board of Education, the University of Calgary, and Medicine Hat College before moving to Victoria, BC in 1992. At the University of Victoria he became an Assistant and then a tenured Associate Professor in the department of Curriculum and Instruction (formerly Arts in Education). He held this position until his retirement in 2017.

Dalton’s scholarly interests include: spontaneous art production, multicultural issues in art and education, art criticism, gender identity development and its expression in children’s art and play. Throughout his academic career, he has consistently produced and exhibited artwork regionally and nationally in solo and group shows, and plans to continue doing so in retirement. Through photography, painting, and mixed media, he explores the nature of perception, the processes of plants and animals, cultural symbols, and collective mythology. His work can be found in the collections of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Medicine Hat College, the City of Medicine Hat, Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, and Esso Resources.
