Jennifer Annesley

Born, raised and educated in Edmonton, Alberta, Jennifer Annesley holds a BFA from the University of Alberta in art and design (1985). Annesley’s watercolours and charcoal drawings have been influenced by a passion for historical art and architecture as well as by remote locations in the natural world. Her work is held in private and public collections worldwide and has received numerous awards, including the People’s Choice Award from the Medici Art Foundation (1995) and the prestigious A.J. Casson Medal (2006) — the highest honour for watercolour in Canada. She is active in the art community and regularly serves as a juror or critic for several of Alberta’s professional arts organizations. She has donated artwork, art instruction and volunteer time to many charities, including several working in and around Edmonton.

Annesley looks for unusual light and shadows in her still lifes, landscapes, streetscapes, interiors and portraiture. She travels around the world and works from her own photographs to create dramatic and often boldly colourful works that draw from multiple photographs of the subject. She describes these compositions as a distilled reality or an idealized memory of the experience.
