James Corrigan
1955 - 2017
Jim (James) Corrigan was born in Red Deer, Alberta in 1955. He studied art at Red Deer College and at the Manchester Polytechnic School of Art in England as well as painting at the University of Alberta where he received a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree and a Masters of Visual Art Degree.
Beginning his works with onsite sketches and watercolours, Jim explored the sense of a place before beginning on the canvas. Focusing on the elements within nature and those which act upon the landscape, Jim created multiple canvases. Traditional in nature, his paintings get their abstract quality from the way in which they are arranged; any number of configurations depending on the venue or mood. This seeming arbitrariness highlights the impossibility of seeing such landscapes from one point of view and the changes that all land must undergo during the passage of time. Drawing on masters like John Constable and H.G. Glyde, Jim internalized the lesson of staying true to one’s self and one’s vision and that artists should strive to do their best work every time.
Jim’s paintings have been exhibited in Edmonton, Calgary, St. Albert, Prince George, Red Deer and Stony Plain. His paintings are held in the collections of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the University of Alberta, the Walter C. MacKenzie Health Sciences Centre, the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, K-Bro Linen Systems, Witter Binder, the Art Gallery of Alberta, the Glenbow Museum, as well as many private collections in Canada and the United States. Jim passed away in 2017.
