Ian Cook

Sculptor Ian Cook was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1943. He earned a Bachelor of Education Degree, majoring in Art, and a Fine Arts Degree, with a major in sculpture, from the University of Calgary. He also earned a Master of Visual Arts in sculpture from the University of Alberta. Ian is an instructor of Sculpture, Visual Fundamentals and Drawing at Red Deer College and has led many summer courses on bronze casting for Red Deer College.

With references to the four elements – earth, air, fire and water – Ian’s work captures the human race’s impact on their environment, including issues like erosion, technology and climate change. Technically complicated, his pieces push the boundaries of design with their size, strength and stability. Working in bronze, he often combines man-made forms with natural ones, and with balance, creates suspense and tension.

Ian’s work has been shown throughout Alberta and in Japan. Some of his pieces are held in the collections of the University of Alberta, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Canada Art Bank, Telus, Red Deer College and by a variety of private collectors.
