Keith Chisholm

Landscape painter Keith Chisholm was born in Portsmouth, England and immigrated to Canada in 1956. Keith was raised in Alberta and attended the Ontario College of Art in Toronto, graduating in 1972. In addition to pursuing his own craft, Keith has taught for the Avalon Consolidated School Board and the Fine Art Extension Department of Memorial University in St. Johns, Newfoundland. He also spent 20 years in professional illustration, graphic design and visual communications but is now fully focused on painting.

Keith is fascinated by the Canadian landscape, which began when he first saw Newfoundland and Labrador upon arriving in Canada. He was also captivated as he travelled west – sailing up the St. Lawrence river and travelling by train to Edmonton.

Combining elements of abstract expressionism, traditional landscape painting and contemporary painting, Keith creates sophisticated imagery that encourages the viewer to experience it with all five senses. Working with acrylic polymers, Keith uses repetition and layering to build texture on the canvas, hoping to express the individual’s emotional reaction to experiences with nature.

Keith’s work has been shown in Alberta, British Columbia, Newfoundland and Ontario. He has prepared artworks and commissions for of a variety of clients, including the Alberta Cancer Board, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the City of Edmonton, the Commonwealth Games Commission, the Government of Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Syncrude Canada Ltd., and the University of Alberta Hospital. He has been the recipient of a McLean Foundation Scholarship, a Birks Bronze Medal and a Henry Birks Award of Excellence.
