Christine Cheung

Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Christine Cheung earned her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Calgary. She then went on complete her Master of Fine Arts at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax. Christine now resides in Berlin, Germany.

Working with a variety of abstract techniques, including her choice of sometimes unconventional materials, Christine’s paintings begin with a collective experience, but leave the viewer to form their own impression. Bringing aspects of events, history and places, the paintings seek to question the issues of daily living and the transience of being – sometimes imploring the viewer to just let go. Her strong use of imagery and colour coupled with her international experience, Christine’s work can transcend culture and create a sense of connection and shared existence.

Christine’s work has been exhibited across the world, including shows in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Serbia, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, Indonesia, Thailand and China. She received the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta’s Emerging Artist Award in 2008 and the D.L Stevenson Award in Painting in 2002. Christine has also completed residencies in Germany, Norway, Austria, Canada, Indonesia, Thailand and China; given a variety of presentations and workshop; been involved in curatorial projects; and been featured in a variety of publications. Her work is held in collections in Norway, Indonesia, Canada, and Finland.
