Katrina Chaytor

Ceramics artist Katrina Chaytor was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Katrina earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and her Master of Fine Arts from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University.

Katrina’s ceramic works are both functional and visually stunning. Inspired by nature – specifically, her Newfoundland childhood home and the prairie landscapes – and by the digital world and technology, the patterns, layering and coloured glazes in her decorative work are eye catching and beautiful. Her pieces explore the balance between surface and structure and the rational and random.

Katrina’s work has been publicly exhibited throughout Canada and the United States and in China, South Korea, Norway and Greece. She has been featured in a variety of publications and received a number of grants and awards, including the 2010 Award of Honour from the Alberta Craft Council. Her works are held in a number of private and public collections, including the collections of 3M Canada Inc., the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Esplanade Art Gallery in Medicine Hat, the Manitoba Arts Council, New Brunswick Museum, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Shanghai Arts and Crafts Museum and the Canadian Ceramic Artists Charter Ceramics Collection.

Through teaching classes and workshops and guest lecturing, Katrina has been heavily involved in passing on her knowledge to students and fellow artists. She has taught courses at the Alberta College of Art + Design, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Red Deer College, the University of Manitoba, the University of Alberta and the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and for the Calgary Board of Education. She has lectured and taught workshops in Canada, the United States and Australia.
