Jessie Ursenbach

1895 - 1987

Jessie Redd Ursenbach was born in New Harmony, Washington County, Utah on August 15, 1895. She graduated with first class honours from the Knight Academy Secondary School in Raymond, Alberta, and increased her knowledge and practice of art by attending summer programs at the Banff School of Art and classes at the Ontario College of Art.

Jessie was an active member of the Lethbridge Sketch Club, the Alberta Society of Artists and the Canadian Federation of Artists. Jessie taught private art lessons as well as school classes in Raymond, Cardston and Glenwood, and contributed to the supervision of art in schools of southern Alberta.

Although she had the opportunity to study modern art in Toronto, Jessie preferred a more realistic style of painting. Her watercolours were inspired by her church, her home and the people around her. Jessie’s predominantly floral paintings are a loving and spiritual tribute to the beauty of God’s work on earth.

Her works were exhibited in a variety of shows with the Alberta Society for the Arts and across Canada and in the United States. Some of her pieces reside in the collections of the University of Lethbridge, the Galt Museum and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, as well as in a number of private collections.

Jessie passed away in 1987.
