Laurie Steen

Laurie Steen was raised in Millarville, Alberta. She grew up with a deep understanding of and a respect for nature; specifically the relationships we as human beings have with it. A purist in many ways, Laurie's drawings are as emotional as they are intellectual. Her pieces seek to embrace and demonstrate a subtle stillness and movement in life, through themes exploring nature, the portrait and the human form.

"There is a silence and simplicity, that I am compelled to search for every day. A simplicity, which further defines my concept of the line, my belief in drawing and the act of finding my own figuration. A figuration that discusses the moments within our movement as individuals; ...moments that define the essence of simply being human."

Laurie graduated with a B.I.D. and a thesis prize from the Interior Design program at the University of Manitoba in 1993, where she also taught sketch camps and drawing classes, a complement to the fact that she has been drawing throughout her life, and that drawing remains the genesis of her work today. She has also studied fine arts at the University of Calgary.

Laurie has been a part of many solo and group exhibitions in Calgary and in Switzerland, including collaborating with artists of many different media on interdisciplinary, performance and design based projects. Laurie has her work in numerous private and corporate collections.
