Nathan Birch

Nathan Birch is a painter who was born in Lansing, Michigan. Birch generally paints landscapes in a diptych format on canvases of different sizes or depths, with the intent of reflecting the tension between “painting as window” and “painting as object.” His works have been profiled regularly in print and television media and have also been featured in exhibitions in Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver. In 1996, he was awarded Best Composition at The Works Art and Design Festival in Edmonton, and in 2008 he was the feature artist for SBC Surf Magazine. His work is represented in corporate and public collections including the Canada Council for the Arts.

Birch moved to Canada as a young child and grew up in Edmonton. In 2000, he received his BFA in painting from the Alberta College of Art and Design and has volunteered with the Artists Mentoring Program at Jasper Place High School in Edmonton. Birch paints the places he has lived: the Canadian Rockies, the Alberta prairies and the west coast of British Columbia. He lives and works on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.
