Patrick Morin

1954 - 1989

Patrick Morin was born September 1, 1954 in Montreal, Quebec. He moved to Edmonton, Alberta, in 1960 with his family. Morin graduated in 1979 from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Arts in Geography, and a Minor in Art. While getting his minor, Morin studied with Catherine Burges, who encouraged him to continue his art studies. Under the tutelage of Peter Hide, Morin earned a Bachelor of Arts Special Certificate in Sculpture, and a Master of Visual Arts in Sculpture in 1984. Morin created large-scale abstract forms using wood and occasionally steel if the structure required structural support. Some of his sculptures are stained, and others are painted. Morin decided to stain works, where the grain of the wood added to the shape and flow of the sculpture. In the years between graduating with a Master’s and his death, Morin created a small but moving collection, which was starting to gain attention. He eventually had to scale down work to smaller creations after his poor health stared to affect his creations. Morin passed away from AIDS on February 16, 1989 at the age of 34. Morin’s untimely death was most certainly a tragic loss to the art community.
