Martin Bennett

Martin Bennett was born in Winchester, England and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1975, settling in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Bennett studied painting at the Alberta College of Art and Design from 1988 to 1992, graduating with distinction. Bennett has held solo shows in Alberta, Toronto, and London, England, and has been included in group exhibitions across Canada. His works are held in several corporate, private and public collections, including Alberta museums such as the Glenbow Museum, the University of Calgary Nickle Galleries, the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery and the Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre in Medicine Hat. In 1997, Bennett was a Visiting Artist to a Fluxus event at INK.art & text in Zurich, Switzerland. He has lived in several Canadian cities, as well as in England and Italy.

Bennett has become known for his “Static Image Paintings” that are created using a complex methodology consisting of photography, photocopying, digital manipulation, drawing, painting and sanding. He uses historic photographs or images that he has captured himself while travelling Canadian, Italian and British cities. Both his work and his technique have been the subjects of much critical analysis, and he has received several awards and grants to support his practice.
