Patrick Matheson

Patrick Matheson is a ceramic artist who hand builds functional and semi-functional vessel forms. Versed in many different ceramic techniques, he works regularly with raku, to experiment with its unpredictable and often otherworldly results.
Matheson also produces two-dimensional work ranging from lithography, painting, drawing, and multi-media sculpture. He is strongly influenced by the rural environment where he lives, and the history of the region. A grandson of Alberta pioneers, Matheson works out of “The Farm” Studio on his family’s original homestead near Sylvan Lake, and is inspired by the cultural, socio-political, and economic factors that shaped the history of the region and impacted its physical landscape.
Matheson received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics from the University of Calgary, and his Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics from the University of Regina in 1994. He was a seasonal instructor at the University of Regina for seven years, where he taught ceramics and 2D and 3D design.
In addition to his career as an artist and arts educator, Matheson is also an arts administrator, having taken on various positions in his community including art history librarian, curator, public art coordinator, and most recently, the curator of art at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery.
