Marcia Adzich
“I have chosen to build my work around experiences which are full of secrets, passions, and loves,” says Edmonton painter and sculptor Marcy Adzich, concluding, “I believe that no artwork is ever really complete because in the life of one person, a transformation occurs at every moment.”
After earning her B.F.A. in Sculpture at the University of Alberta, she worked for Sir Anthony Caro in London (1994 – 1996) as a studio assistant charged with helping fabricate, restore, and ship sculptures, and later earned her M.F.A. from the University of Victoria (2001). She worked as an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Art at the University of Oregon in Eugene.
FFWD Magazine described Adzich’s work in the group exhibition At Variance by saying that her “floor and wall-mounted sculptures, amassed of various furniture, miniature landscapes, and seemingly nostalgic objects, which are at once celebratory (silver balloons), or lamenting (plastic flowers), present… the challenge of unpacking the assemblage and locating its meaning…. For Adzich, the mass-marketing of holiday display items, which become useless after the holiday’s date, roadside memorials to unknown victims, and cheap bargain goods, creates a strange place for the collision of human-created spaces and naturally decaying places.”
Adzich has participated in several solo and group exhibitions, including at Edmonton’s Latitude 53 and Café Budapest, the Yukon Arts Centre, and the National Juried Fine Arts Show at the State of the Art Gallery in Ithaca, New York. Her work appears in numerous private collections, including that of Canada Research Chair professor Tim Caulfield.
