Yuriko Kitamura

Yuriko Kitamura is a watercolour artist specializing in mixed-media painting on rice paper, and in Japanese-style inked-brush drawings. Kitamura pioneered the technique of dye painting on rice paper, and taught this method for over fourteen years at the University of Alberta Faculty of Extension. Her mixed media paintings are created using a “wet on wet” watercolour technique on rice paper. Since rice paper is porous, Kitamura applies wax lines as a resist, in order to contain the dyes and pigments in their designated areas. As a final step, she applies wax to the whole rice paper in order to protect it from damage by moisture in the air.
Kitamura’s aesthetic approach captures the timelessness and serenity in nature. She strives to honour the qualities of simplification, decorativeness, and serenity in her work, and is interested in drawing and capturing the various expectations and cycles of life. Her primary work is done on location, in watercolour and in pencil sketch.
Kitamura moved to Canada in the early 1960’s after completing a BSc in Pharmacology in Japan. She began her career in art when she moved to Alberta, and has been regularly exhibiting in solo and group shows in galleries throughout Canada and abroad.
