Cindy Barratt

Cindy was born and raised in Spruce Grove. Interested in art since early childhood, she is largely self-taught. Her practice has been enhanced by University of Alberta Extension courses and workshops. In 1991 she decided to pursue art as a full-time career. She worked originally in oils, but later decided to concentrate on watercolour – her work combines a strong colour element, dynamic light and a loose realistic style, and watercolours suit her expressiveness.

Initially, Cindy specialized in bold floral portraits, capturing the mood and essence of the blooms. The latest in this series is the Iconic Alberta Rose, depicting the wild rose in various seasons and stages, reflecting parallels with the province and people. More recently, she has turned to landscapes, and the flora and fauna of conservation areas. She is increasingly interested in raising conservation awareness, to help protect habitats and species.

Cindy teaches classes and workshops at Metro Continuing Education in Edmonton, for the Allied Arts Council (AAC) in Spruce Grove and in various communities in Alberta. She is an active member of the arts community, having served in the Federation of Canadian Artists, Edmonton Branch. She is also a member of the Allied Artists of Spruce Grove, and the Alberta Society of Artists. In 2008, she received the Award of Excellence in the category of Arts from the City of Spruce Grove, in recognition of her art work and her volunteer contributions.

Her works can be found in Alberta Treasury Branches, the City of Spruce Grove, and in other corporate and private collections. She is represented by the Scott Gallery in Edmonton and the Leighton Art Centre in Calgary, amongst other venues. Her Iconic Alberta Rose series has been exhibited at the McMullen Gallery, University of Alberta Hospital (2014), and the Visual Arts Studio Association in St Albert (2015).
