Allen Ball

Allen Ball is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Alberta where he is also the Associate Chair of Undergraduate Studies and the Co-ordinator, Painting. Ball is an academic and a multimedia artist. In addition to his tenure at the University of Alberta, he has taught printmaking, drawing and painting at Edmonton’s MacEwan University. Ball has chaired mural projects at the University of Alberta and was the Scholar in Residence for Arts Research in Nanotechnology at the National Institute for Nanotechnology at the University of Alberta. He has supervised many graduate students and is active on numerous academic committees. Ball is a strong presence in Edmonton’s art community, having worked for Latitude 53 and as Executive Director of Harcourt House Arts Centre. He has served in leadership positions for many public and not-for-profit organizations, including as a member of the Edmonton Arts Council’s Public Art Committee, the Chair for the City of Edmonton Percent for Art Program and the Chair of the Art in Downtown Public Places Program through the Business Council for the Visual Arts.

Ball often explores symbols and themes from both the military and religion in his work, incorporating ideas from Christian, Jewish and Muslim traditions into pieces that challenge through perspective and inquiry. He served as an embedded official Canadian War Artist with the Canadian Forces Operation Calumet in the Sinai Peninsula in 2007. He has produced several public art installations, and his work exhibits often in Edmonton and around Alberta. It is held in private and public collections both in Canada and internationally.

Ball is a graduate of the Printmaking Independent Study Program (1987) and earned a Foundation Studies Certificate (1981) and a BA with Honours in fine art – painting (1984) all from Camberwell College of Arts and Crafts in London, England. He also holds an MVA in painting (1990) from the University of Alberta.
